Jean Bridges

The life of Emma Jean Bridges, 100, who passed away Feb. 15 in DeSoto, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. March 1 at Millcreek Community Church, 7825 Gleason Rd., Shawnee.

A brief graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Marion Cemetery.

Jean was born Dec. 11, 1924, in Pueblo, Colorado, to Emmet and Nellie Spees.

She met a handsome young airman at a local roller-skating rink and on Oct. 12, 1945, she married James H. Bridges.

He and two of their children, Jim Bridges and Cathy Hill, preceded her in death.

Jean was an excellent cook and a great seamstress. She sewed clothes for her children for years and then made and gave away numerous quilts.

She loved to escape to the garden and spent many hours there, as well as many hours canning or freezing produce and making jelly.

Her cooking skills came in handy when Jim and Jean ran the Owl Car Café in Marion, where her barbeque chicken, chicken fried steak, and biscuits and gravy are still talked about.

She loved outings with her family and recently celebrated her 100th birthday with a ride on a Ferris wheel at Scheels as part of a family celebration.

She is survived by children Carolyn Hensley of DeSoto, Rebecca Wingfield of Marion, Wayne Bridges (and wife Barb) of Shawnee, Sandy Martin (and husband Thor) of Argonia, and Troy Bridges of Milan, along with her dear friend and sister-in law, Shirley Lay of De Soto, Kansas; daughter-in-law Karen Bridges of Newark, California; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her last few years were spent at Hillside Village in De Soto. The family would like to express deep appreciation to all those at Hillside and recently Harbor Hospice who took such wonderful, loving care of Jean.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hillside Village of De Soto, 3360 W. 85th St, DeSoto KS 66018.
