Joel Hayes Sr.

Memorial services for Joel Robert Hayes Sr., 85, Moundridge, who passed away Friday, April 10, 2026, at his home, will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 2, 2026 at West Zion Mennonite Church, Moundridge.

Inurnment will take place at West Zion Cemetery, rural Moundridge.

He owned and operated Hayes Auto Service in Florence for many years.

Joel was born June 4, 1940, in Wichita to Elmer J. and Capitola (Jones) Hayes. He was united in marriage Aug. 21, 1959, in Wichita to Alice D. Percival.

Joel was a race car driver for many years. He enjoyed playing cards, being host for barbecues, playing guitar and singing, and being host for family get-togethers.

Joel especially enjoyed attending the annual Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield.

Above all, Joel loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alice Hayes of Moundridge; children Joel R. Hayes, Jr. (and Susan Johnson) of Louisville, Colorado; Karen Hayes of San Antonio, Texas; Billy (and Shu) Hayes of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and Kathryn Hayes of Moundridge; bonus daughter Amanda Fike of Moundridge; siblings Jean (and Robin) Hayes of Monroe, Arkansas; Vernon Hayes of Caldwell; Reba Jo (and Kris) Flower of Winfield; and Allen Hayes of Florence; sister-in-law Jeanetta Hayes of Wichita; six grandchildren, Lana, Logan, David (and DL), Jesse, Alicia, and Alexia; bonus grandchildren, Jayden and Ambrleigh Rose; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings, Clay Marshall, John Marshall, Jim Hayes, Jane Hook, Jack Hayes, Rosemary June Haskins, Jerald Hayes, and Walter Hayes.

Cremation is planned.
