Lois Caudell

Lois Caroline Matz Caudell, 92, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 30, 2023, at her daughter’s home in Bowie, Maryland.

Born Aug. 5, 1931, in Hillsboro, she grew up on a farm in nearby Canada. Elementary school years were spent in a one-room rural school.

After graduating from Hillsboro High School, she accepted a position with the Lutheran Church affiliated Armed Services Commission in Washington, DC.

In 1952, she started work at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which in 1958 became the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

She married Garland Winston “Dutch” Caudell Jr. in 1957.

Lois enjoyed watching “Judge Judy,” “Family Feud” and Johnny Carson and attending group lunches with friends from the VFW, Steamfitter Retirees, and Joyful Seniors.

She was an avid reader of the Washington Post, Hillsboro Star-Journal, and Marion County Record.

Her mind was sharp as a tack, but her 92-year-old lungs and heart failed her.

She was preceded in death by parents Carl and Louise (Ebel) Matz, husband Dutch, son Kevin Winston Caudell, brothers Paul and Robert Matz, and sons-in-law Kenneth Twining and Stephen Berry.

Survivors include daughters Brenda Twining, Wanda Berry, and Janet Caudell (and husband Charles Higgs); grandchildren Angela Gottula, Kurt Twining (and wife Melani), and Brad Twining (and wife Leslie); and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was interred at Washington National Cemetery, Suitland, Maryland.

Memorial donations may be sent to Luminis Health Gilchrist Lifecare Institute (https://supportaamc.luminishealth.org/gilchristlifecareinstitute).
