Marie Clark
A celebration of the 100 years of life of Marie Clark of Burns, who passed away Saturday, May 11, in El Dorado, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at Burns Cornerstone Church.
Friends and relatives will gather 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the church.
Private burial will be later at Summit Cemetery, 40th and Vista Rds.
Marie was born Aug. 7, 1923, to George and Adina Ehmke. She was the only daughter in a family of five.
She grew up on farms and attended grade school and junior high at various schools in Kansas and Oklahoma.
Her family moved to the Burns area when she was around 14. She graduated from Burns High School in 1941.
Marie met her forever spouse, Ivan Clark, at a church picnic. They were married Feb. 14, 1942. To this union, five children were born: Diane, Gloria, Jennifer, Peggy and Mack.
Marie and Ike farmed all their lives near Burns. His family became hers as her parents moved to Ohio after she wed.
Sundays were spent at Ike’s parents for dinner with the Clark family after church.
Marie had many occupations as a farm wife: cooking, keeping house, tending animals, raising children, gardening, canning, and sewing.
She enjoyed wallpapering for people and making many crafts. For many years, she had a craft show to sell her wares.
Marie was a member of Burns Cornerstone Church (formerly Burns Methodist Church) and taught Sunday school.
She also was a 4-H leader and a member of the 20th Century Club.
Marie especially enjoyed yard work and always had a hoe in her hand when she was outside.
She enjoyed many games of Scrabble and always looked forward to visits and a game or two with whoever came by.
Marie is survived by four children, Diane (and husband Larry) Nelson of Cassoday, Gloria (and husband Wayne) Handle of Towanda, Peggy (and husband Martin) van der Weg of Newton, and Mack (and wife Shayla) Clark of Burns; 28 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and 20 great- great-grandchildren with another great-great-grandson due in July.
She also is survived by her sister-in-law, Sherol (and husband Marvin) Nightengale.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Ivan; her daughter, Jennifer; brothers Homer, Wilbur, Harvey, Bruce and their spouses; infant sister Alfreida; and her husband’s siblings, Maude, Bill, Margaret, Norma, Joyce, and Gordon and their spouses.
