Mary Hett

Funeral services for Mary May (Christensen) Hett, 99, who passed away Feb. 10, 2024, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024, at Eastmoor United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow at Marion Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home.

Mary was born June 19, 1924, in Canada, Kansas, to William and Rachel Christensen.

She graduated from Marion High School and later married Harry Hein of Hillsboro

During World War II, they lived in Bremerton, Washington. At the end of the war, they returned to Hillsboro and later divorced.

Mary worked at Tip Top Credit Union, eventually moving to Marion. There, she was employed as a legal secretary at the Morse and Batt law firm.

Mary remained there for approximately 25 years, until her retirement. During this time, Mary also did bookkeeping and tax preparation for members of the community from her home.

Additionally, she was a talented seamstress who made wedding dresses and custom clothing for individuals.

In 1976, Mary married Marvin Hett. She was actively involved in her church as well as Marion Senior Center. She was an avid Royals fan and rarely missed watching a game.

She was dearly loved by all her friends and always provided for those who were ailing or in need.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; sisters Virginia and Georgia; sister-in-law Marge Christensen; son Gene Hein; and great-grandson Zachariah Freitek.

Survivors include brother Eugene Christensen; daughters Rita Highsmith, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Crystal Downey of O’Fallon, Missouri; grandchildren Marty Highsmith of Derby; Lori Freitek of Kansas City, Missouri; Gina Granvold of Kirkland, Washington; Troy Hein of Portland, Oregon; Demi Brown of O’Fallon, Missouri; and Preston Arthur of O’Fallon, Missouri; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
