Naomi Nelson

Funeral services for Naomi Elizabeth (Markley) Nelson, 94, who died Dec. 27, 2023, were 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Lindsborg. Pastor Dallas Peterson officiated. Burial followed at Hebron Lutheran Cemetery, rural Burdick.

A beloved mother, wife, and friend, Naomi will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.

She was born July 5, 1929, in Council Grove to Lylia and Lay Markley and spent her formative years in Delavan.

In 1950, she married Calvin Gene Nelson. Her life was devoted to being a farmer’s wife in Burdick and to raising her two sons. At Gene’s death in 2000, Naomi and Gene had been married nearly 50 years.

As a long-time member of Hebron Lutheran Church and the larger Burdick community, Naomi was deeply involved in civic and church activities, contributing her time and talents, whether baking Swedish rye bread or painting various craft projects.

Her greatest passion, after her own children were grown, was caring for many children in the community, who no doubt remember their “Nomie” with fondness.

Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gene, and brother Bill. Survivors include sons Thomas and David (and David’s mate, Jennifer Gadd), grandchildren Rachel and Maggie, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Riverview Estates or to Hebron Lutheran Church, Burdick in care of Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N Washington St, Lindsborg KS 67456.
