Marion police officer Duane McCarty will lead the department as interim chief while the city looks for a replacement for Clinton Jeffrey, who resigned last month.

City council members voted 4-0 Monday to appoint McCarty.

They also appointed city treasurer Becky Makovec as interim city clerk and freedom of information officer.

Former city clerk Tiffany Jeffrey also resigned as did assistant police chief Steve Janzen after a Dec. 13 executive session at which council members discussed city administrator Mark Skiles’ future employment. The council voted to fire Skiles on Dec. 23.

Records from the city show Janzen’s salary at $49,046, Clinton Jeffrey’s at $53,955, and Tiffany Jeffrey’s at $51,230.

The city has advertised the jobs on its website, directing potential job candidates to contact Mayor David Mayfield.

It also is hiring a police officer after Aaron Slater left to work again for the sheriff’s office. A water treatment plant operator and a groundskeeper round out available jobs.

The city administrator job isn’t listed, and the council has not discussed the open position.
