Despite not taking a full team, the Marion High School Warriors wrestling team had two weight class champions and a runner-up Friday at the Hoisington Invitational.
Beretta Janzen was 5-0 at 113 pounds to place first. He also defeated the only wrestler he lost to in the Halstead Invitational two weeks earlier.
Brody Carroll was also 5-0 at 152 pounds to place first, and Evan Slater was 4-1 at 220 pounds to place second.
Eric Regnier placed third at 126 pounds. With the 126- and 132-pound weight classes combined, Regnier also wrestled against competitors in the higher weight class.
Adam Janzen was 3-2 at 182 pounds to place third.
Derrick Dvorak was 2-3 at 160 pounds; Zac Lewman was 2-3 at 170 pounds; and Zac Dvorak was 1-4 at 152 pounds.
“We keep having minor little setbacks, but we’re getting better,” coach Chad Adkins said. “Everybody is getting better, other teams too.”
Marion also had a junior varsity meet Saturday at home.
“We don’t have enough JV, we need more,” Adkins said.
Schools have had to cut back on the number of tournaments offered because of budget concerns, and junior varsity tournaments are usually the first to go, he said.
The next competition for Marion is Thursday in the Chase County Double Dual.
