John Miller

Private inurnment at Goessel Cemetery is planned for John L. Miller, 90, who died Sept. 2 at Bethesda Home in Goessel.

He was born on New Year’s Eve, 1933, to Lee and Ruth Miller in their home near Scott in LaGrange County, Indiana.

His father was a Mennonite bishop over five congregations. The family also worked a farm.

His parents sent him to Hesston for his sophomore year of high school. He later attended Hesston College until he was drafted and completed alternative service as a hospital aide.

While working at Wichita Mennonite Mission Church, he met Maxine Woelk. They were married Oct. 1, 1955, raising four children and living in 25 homes in five states while he worked as a turkey rancher, printer, mobile home builder, sales manager, restaurant manager, and auto transporter. She died in 2024.

Survivors include daughters Jerri Kayll and Suzanne Miller; sons Jack Warkentin Miller and Bruce Miller; siblings Silas Miller, Martha Hartman, and Esther Miller; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with Bethesda Home, Goessel.
