John Unruh

Services for John Unruh, 87, who died Nov. 20 at Salem Home in Hillsboro, were last week.

Born May 24, 1938, in Goessel to David and Justine (Janzen) Unruh, he graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1958 and qualified for the state meet in the mile his senior year.

After graduation, he began working for Rhodes Construction doing concrete work.

He married Eileen Jost on October 8, 1960, at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church, rural Hillsboro.

They made their home in McPherson before moving to Evanston, Illinois, in June, 1961.

He completed his 1-W service working in the maintenance department at Evanston Hospital.

Upon returning to Kansas in 1963, John resumed working for Rhodes Construction and also worked for Kansas Department of Transportation and the Hillsboro street department, retiring in 2003.

Survivors include his wife, daughter Lisa Herbel of Highlands, Colorado, and two granddaughters.

Memorials have been established with Hillsboro Lions Club and the church.

Jost Funeral Home, Hillsboro, was in charge of arrangements.
