Juana Hackfield

Juana Aquino Hackfield passed away peacefully July 30 at Stanford Court Nursing Center in Santee, California, at age 93.

Juana “Naning” Aquino was born June 24, 1927, in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, Philippines. In 1945, she married Richard “Dick” Johnson while he was stationed there during World War II. By 1947, Juana and their first child were able to join her husband in the U.S.

They lived first in Florence and later in Canton, where Dick worked as a depot agent for the Santa Fe Railway. During that time, they added four more children to their family.

In 1973, Juana and Dick divorced while living in Larned, and Juana moved to San Diego, California, with their youngest daughter.

Juana met her second husband, Paul Hackfield, in San Diego, and they married in 1993. Juana and Paul enjoyed their retirement years, living in La Mesa, California.

Juana continued a happy and healthy lifestyle for many years after Paul’s passing in 2005. According to her, she celebrated her “best birthday ever” when she turned 90, spending the day at a local casino and the evening with all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by children Shirley Fein, Ellen Hayes and husband Larry, Ken Johnson and wife Debbie, Ruth French and husband George, and Laura Gall; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister in the Philippines; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, both in the Philippines and the U.S.

Juana will be interred with Paul at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.
