June Jost
June Jost was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Hillsboro. He was the eighth of nine children born to Peter and Margaret (Klassen) Jost.
He grew to manhood on their family farm south of Hillsboro. June graduated from Creswell School. Upon graduation, he worked on the family farm with his parents.
In 1936, the family relocated to the Youngtown Community, where he continued to farm. During this time, he would meet his best friend and love of his life, Lois Scharenberg. On Oct. 28, 1938, June and Lois were married at Youngtown Church. The young couple farmed and later operated a dairy, until the mid 1960s, when June decided to get into law enforcement.
He worked as a policeman in Marion and later went to work as undersheriff. He decided to run for sheriff, and was elected into office in 1970. He served as Marion County Sheriff for the next 14 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1985.
June enjoyed spiritual and country music and loved to play the harmonica. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed bowling, watching football, and especially watching or listening to baseball. He was a Kansas City Royals fan.
He and Lois were members of Youngtown Church and later transferred membership to EUB Church of Marion, which later became Eastmoor United Methodist Church.
He was a member of the Kansas Sheriff’s Association and active in Marion Kiwanis. He enjoyed working with cattle and horses. He broke and trained horses for others; this was hard work but was fulfilling to June.
He also enjoyed children, and drove a school bus for many years. In retirement, June and Lois enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and each other.
He, with the assistance of his granddaughter, wrote his biography, “Days of June.”
On March 4, 2010, June was received into the arms of his maker from St. Luke Hospital in Marion. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Peter, John, Susie Schmidt, Dave, Herb, Jake, Harold and Carl; and son-in-law, Bob Ames.
