Kassebaum kudos

To the editor:

I enjoyed reading Finn Hartnett’s article Jan. 15 about former Senator Nancy Kassebaum receiving the Presidential Citizens Medal, one of the country’s highest civilian honors.

This honor should have been covered more in depth by the news outlets of the state. If anyone deserves this honor, it would be former Senator Kassebaum.

As Finn put it in his article, she was good about crossing party lines and working for the good of our country, not for special interest groups or even her own Republican Party.

She also praised Governor Laura Kelly, who after taking office has turned the State of Kansas around from short-funding highways, bridges, schools and other services, caused by Sam Brownback’s tax cuts, which left the state experiencing a downgrading of its credit rating.

We need more people in government, especially at this time in history, who are not afraid to be independent and show some backbone in standing up for the people when needed and not being blindfolded as to what will be happening to our great country in the next four years as President Donald Trump and MAGA remake it into an authoritative state instead of a democracy, with billionaires in charge of running our government and cutting their own taxes.

The Kansas Reflector reprinted Finn’s article, which I found to be an honor for him to showcase his writing. I look forward to more articles from Finn.
