Klenda, Zeiner set MHS school records

Several Marion track athletes won medals Friday at the Conrad Nightingale Invitational in Halstead and two Warriors set school records.

Nick Klenda won the discus with a throw of 182 feet, 10 inches to set a Marion High School record and a meet record. He also placed third in the shot put with a distance of 44-8.5.

“Nick’s throw was just a great performance by a very good track and field athelete,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “He studies the discus and knows how to make adjustments.”

Julia Zeiner set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.78 seconds, which earned second place.

“Julia ran her first 100 hurdle race in three years and competed very well,” Thierolf said. “She will only get better as she gets more comfortable in that race.”

She did win the long jump, 17-4; 300 hurdles, 49.01; and finished second in the triple jump, 37-5.

Two Warriors battled for second in the long jump. Tylor Neil placed third with a jump of 20-1 and Drew Maddox finished second by an inch, 20-2. Neil won the triple jump with a leap of 43-6.25, and Whitney Gordon won the high jump, 5-2.

“Tylor, like Nick, really studies his events and makes some great adjustments during the meet,” Thierolf said.

Colten Johnson won fourth-place medals in the javelin, with a throw of 158 feet, and pole vault, 12-6. Jordan Hett won an individual fourth-place time in the 3200, 10:32, and was part of the third-place 4x800 relay team with Eric Vogel, Patrick McCarty, and Ryan Jones that finished in 8:47.4.

Jaclyn DeForest also ran to third place in the 3200 with a time of 13:27.

“We are getting better each meet so we keep looking forward,” Thierolf said.
