Lady Cougars victorious

Staff writer

After defeating the top-seeded Wakefield Lady Bombers a week earlier in the invitational tournament at Centre, the Lady Cougars basketball team defeated them again Friday, 29-24.

Field goals by Shelby Makovec and Beka Basore and two 3-point shots by Cacey Simons gave Centre a 10-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

However, the team missed a lot of shots in the second quarter, allowing Wakefield to come back and tie the game at 11.

By the end of the third quarter, Wakefield led, 22-17.

The slow pace continued in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Cougars gradually crept up on the Lady Bombers. Field goals by Amy Makovec and Simons brought Centre within 2 points, 21-23. A 3-pointer by Shelby Makovec gave Centre a 24-23 lead, but a free throw by Wakefield tied the game at 24.

As the game wound down, Simons hit another 3-pointer and Makenzie Deines made a layup, resulting in a 5-point victory for the Lady Cougars.

Simons was the leading scorer, with 14 points, including 4 three-pointers. Other scorers were Shelby Makovec, 6 points; Basore, 4; and Amy Makovec and Deines, 2 each.

The junior varsity defeated Wakefield, 34-30. Top scorers were Jasmin Abdel Ghany, 13, and Brenna Shields, 12. Deines had 7 points, and Kailyn Riffel had 2.
