Leah Cheever

Leah L. Cheever, 91, of Salina, died April 23, 2009, at Salina.

Born Dec. 17, 1917, in Tampa, she was the daughter of Otto and Rachel (Schuber) Nely.

She was a homemaker and waitress, living most of her life in Lost Springs. She moved to Herington in her later years and to Salina in 1997.

On Jan. 22, 1940, she married Ernest E. Cheever in Council Grove. He preceded her in death Aug. 30, 1994. A brother, Harvey Nely, and a sister, Helen Miller, also preceded her.

Survivors include two sons, Don Cheever of Salina and Kenneth Cheever of Abilene; three daughters, Mary Ann Davis of St. Joseph, Mich., Ilene McWhorter of Bennington, and Shirley Dix of Herington; a brother, Fred Nely of Herington; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday morning at Penwell-Gable Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, with Pastor David Boltz officiating.

A burial at Lost Springs Cemetery will be at a future date.

A memorial fund has been established with American Diabetes Association and may be made in care of the funeral home, 404 S. Broadway, Herington KS 67449.
