Lela Brown

Lela M. Brown, 97, of Herington, died Dec. 10 at Medicalodges in Herington.

Born March 7, 1913, at Pretty Prairie, to Claude Sr. and Barbara (Schaudelow) Jones, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church of Herington.

She married Cecil G. Brown Sr. Dec. 29, 1934, in Marion. They owned and operated Brown’s Court from 1934 through 1950 in Herington. They moved to Buena Vista, Colo. Cecil died April 27, 1960, and was buried in Buena Vista. Lela moved to Los Angeles and worked at Loma-Linda Hospital for 27 years.

A son, Cecil Jr.; five brothers, Claude Jr., Leo, John, Lyle, and Cecil; a sister, Lena Jones, and a grandson also preceded her.

Survivors include a son, Jerry of McMinnville, Ore.; two daughters, Ruth Laudemann of White City and Helen Sperber of Grand Junction, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday morning at St. John’s Catholic Church in Herington with the Rev. Mark Wesely officiating. A rosary was recited Monday evening.

Burial will be at a later date in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Buena Vista.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church of Herington and Dickinson County Hospice in care of Penwell-Gable Funeral Home and Crematory, 404 S Broadway St, Herington KS 67449-3038.
