More police?

To the editor:

Perhaps the Marion Police Department could think about creating a reserve unit or an auxiliary police unit.

Such a unit could increase law enforcement capability by far more than a fifth officer.

A reserve or auxiliary unit would attract as potential members individuals who have previous training or experience but who do not wish to work full-time.

Some of these might be veterans who have returned to Marion and whose military experiences would be valuable in civilian life.

Money for training, uniforms, and equipment would need to be in the budget, but the end result would be of much greater value than the addition of a single fifth officer.
