Restoring the Elgin

To the editor:

I would like to congratulate Jim Cloutier and his wife for doing such a magnificent job on restoring the Elgin. I just received my Marion County Record so am envious of the people who have been able to go through and enjoy the renovation.

I want to tell you my sister Norma Hannaford saved the Elgin years ago.

The city wanted to tear it down for a parking lot. She fought to save that beautiful structure. She went to the City Council and even cried tears and said it would be a big loss.

Norma convinced them to sell bonds. She worked very hard on the project. I was one who bought a couple of bonds, and all the loyal Marionites bought them too.

Anyway, that’s how the Elgin was saved.

Norma is so excited and thrilled that the Elgin is now such a lovely place.

If Mr. Cloutier would like to know some of the history of the Elgin, I’m sure Norma would welcome a visit.
