Library plans summer programs

The 2009 summer reading program will begin June 15 and continue through July 10 at Marion City Library.

Students will be able to track their reading on their “Be Creative @ Your Library” reading record.

Programs focusing on art, music, and other creative activities will entertain and educate while encouraging children to explore their creativity.

Librarian Janet Marler said it was important to build reading and literacy activities in children’s days. She encourages parents to read with their children. Reading together should help children do better when school resumes.

The summer reading program is for children who have completed kindergarten through eighth grade. Prizes will be awarded as children reach reading goals.

An adult/teen summer reading program with weekly prizes for those older than 14 is planned.

Story time, for children ages 3 to 6, will be 10 to 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 3 p.m. Fridays, June 12 through July 17. Space will be limited. Pre-registration is required.

For children ages 8 to 12, craft programs are planned from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, June 15 through July 6. The first program will include painting a peg coat rack. It will be followed with making clay pinch pots, making a scrapbook page, and making tie-dyed T-shirts. Material costs are with each class. Pre-registration is required.

Movies will be shown at 2 p.m. Wednesdays, June 10 through July 15. Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult. All movies are newer releases and rated G or PG.

“Books Are Fun,” a clearance sale, is scheduled for June 22 through 25 during regular hours.

Monty Harper, a creative and humorous songwriter, will perform at 10 a.m. July 22.
