Losses pile up for Lady Cougars

The Centre High School Lady Cougars were defeated in two games last week on the road. They lost to Little River, 49-30, and Hope, 57-31.

Playing Friday at Hope, freshman Shelby Makovec made all of Centre’s 7 points in the first half. Centre trailed, 28-7, at halftime.

Makovec added another 8 points in the third quarter along with baskets by Amy Makovec, Genesis Rudolph, and Beka Basore, to outscore Hope 14-12.

Makenzie Deines contributed 2 field goals in a 10-17 fourth quarter. The game ended with a 26-point deficit for the Lady Cougars.

Shelby Makovec scored 17 points altogether, followed by Amy Makovec, Basore, and Deines with 4 each, and Genesis Rudolph, 2.

After Friday’s game, the team’s record fell to 3-7 on the season.

Little River

The Lady Cougars struggled to score Jan. 10 against Little River. Simons made Centre’s only points in the first quarter, and Centre trailed, 10-5, at the end of the quarter.

The girls stepped up their scoring in a 12-14 second quarter. Shelby Makovec made a 3-point shot, a field goal, and 2 free throws. Amy Makovec and Basore also scored. Centre trailed, 24-17, at halftime.

The Lady Cougars added just 13 points in the second half compared with 25 by Little River to lose the game, 49-30.

Simons scored 13 points, followed by Shelby Makovec, 8; Amy Makovec, 4; Basore, 3; and Makenzie Deines, 2.

The junior varsity defeated Little River, 39-20. A 13-point first quarter and 15-point fourth quarter contributed to the 19-point victory. Jasmin Ghany scored 13 points. Other scorers were Deines, 8; Brenna Shields and Yvonne Calvert, 6 each; and Carrie Carlson, Callie Riffel, and Cassidy Hill, 2 each.
