Lowell Goering

Lowell Jay Goering, 75, died Monday at Showalter Villa in Hesston. He was born March 28, 1938, in Newton to Paul P. and Lydia Kaufman Goering.

He graduated from Moundridge High School and attended Bethel College. He worked as a mechanical engineer for Hillsboro Industries for 30 years and at Hesston Corporation for 15 years. After retirement, he worked at the Et Cetera Shop in Hillsboro.

He was active in Trinity Mennonite Church in Hillsboro and wrote a humor column, “Whiz-dumb,” for a number of years in the Hillsboro Free Press.

He married Judith Ann Schmidt on Aug. 11, 1963, at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, Inman.

He is survived by his wife, Judy of Hesston; a sister, Elaine Jantzen of Hillsboro; a brother, Verne M. Goering of Moundridge; a son, Greg Schmidt Goering of Charlottesville, Va.; a daughter, Sheryl Goering of Ellicott City, Md.; and five grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Showalter Villa Chapel, 200 W. Cedar St., Hesston. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Hesston Mennonite Church, 309 S. Main St.

Memorial funds have been established with Showalter Villa Good Samaritan Fund and Mennonite Central Committee.
