Home field proved to be no advantage for the Marion High softball team Monday. The Warriors were eliminated from regional competition at Marion Sports Complex by losing 13-1 to Lyons.

Fans anticipated a close contest between Lyons (13-7) and Marion (12-8), with the fourth-seeded Lions slotted as the home team against the fifth-seeded Warriors.

Marion pitcher Shelby Felvus walked the bases loaded with two out in the bottom of the first but had a chance to get out of the jam on a 3-2 pitch to Kathryn Marshall.

Marshall fouled off the pitch, then drew a walk to force in the first run of the game. Lyons pitcher Logan Griffith walked, scoring another run, and the Lions led 2-0 after one.

Lyons broke the game open in the second inning, sending 14 batters to the plate against Felvus and reliever Emily Hague and scoring 9 runs for an 11-0 lead.

The score was 13-0 in the top of the fourth when the Warriors manufactured their only run of the game. Kourtney Hansen reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, and made it to third on a dropped third strike by Lyons catcher Ashely Fiero.

Taelyn Pagel hit a fly to deep left, and Hansen took off for home on the catch, sliding under the catcher’s tag to score.

The game ended in the top of the fifth after Marion batters were retired in order.
