Main Street Cafe and Bakery opens in Durham

Staff writer

Main Street Café and Bakery in Durham is now up and running after plenty of hard work put in by owners Mark and Kris Wiebe.

The eatery will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The cheery café has an open look. Half walls separate two dining areas from each other as well as the kitchen. White and pastel colors on the walls create a light, airy atmosphere. The floor is shiny concrete.

The Wiebes were happy with the reception they have been receiving.

“It’s going very well,” Mark Wiebe said Monday. “We were not extremely busy on opening day, which was nice, because it gave us a chance to work with our employees and get things organized.”

Home-baked goods the couple sold at area farmers markets are now on the menu at the café. Cinnamon rolls and homemade pies are specialties and can be purchased for takeout when available.

A breakfast casserole is offered, as well as toast made from homemade bread. Homemade granola also is on the menu.

Burgers made with homemade buns, sandwiches, and a salad bar are on the lunch menu. A variety of pies and ice cream are available for dessert.

Breakfast and lunch specials are available every day.

The Wiebes hope to start a Friday evening buffet soon.

Some of their employees worked in the former café, which was damaged during record July flooding. Their experience has been helpful, Wiebe said.

“We appreciate the community support,” he said, “including the donations, labor, and moral support. We are here for them.”
