Man, dog stranded in flood

Staff writer

A Wichita man driving his pickup south on Meridian Rd. turned onto 90th Rd. at 12:20 p.m. Sunday morning and became stranded with his dog in a flooded area.

“He turned onto a road he shouldn’t have been on,” county emergency manager Marcy Hostetler said.

Goessel and Moundridge fire departments responded along with a sheriff’s deputy. They rescued the elderly man and his dog after they were able to reach him.

The deputy then met up with a Harvey County deputy who took the man to his brother’s house.

Numerous roads were flooded Saturday and Sunday after the county got as much as 3.74 inches of rain Friday night and over the weekend.

Hostetler said she, deputy emergency director Dan Schaefer, and firefighters drove county roads throughout the weekend looking for flooded or nearly-flooded roads and posting warnings not to drive through standing water.

Saturday’s at-times-heavy rain didn’t cancel Florence’s Labor Day weekend cyclekart race but did cancel a scheduled vintage baseball game and a ranch rodeo in Burdick.
