Marion extends streak despite delay

Staff writer

A weather delay Friday wasn’t able to wash away Marion’s first home victory of the season. Teams were able to resume play after 1½ hours, and the Warriors beat Bennington, 46-8.

Jameson Looper opened up the game with a 20-yard rushing touchdown. Quarterback Carson Krause then connected with Lane Smith for a 41-yard touchdown.

Immediately after that, lightning and rain clouds rolled in from the west. As rain poured down, most of the crowd huddled inside the Warriors’ new athletic center. Others went home. Play resumed at 9:30 p.m., and the game ran until 11 p.m.

Looper and Krause finished with two touchdowns each. Lane Smith and Kellen Waner each scored a touchdown of their own.

On defense, senior Brian Nguyen had six tackles, four of which resulted in a loss of yards for Bennington.

Senior Luke Watkins had four tackles. And both Jesse Snyder and Wyatt Soyez were able to force fumbles.

The Warriors (3-0) will host longtime rivals Sedgwick (3-0) for their homecoming game Friday.

Hillsboro

The Trojans were unable to capture a road victory Friday in Hesston, losing 27-12.

Jesiah Gooch and Zayne Haslett combined for 196 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Sutton Redger led the team in tackles with five, and Noah Beavers was credited with a sack.

Hillsboro (1-2) will be at home Friday, playing Halstead (1-2) in the Trojans’ homecoming game.

Goessel

For the second time this season, Goessel was unable to put points on the board on Friday.

At 7:00 p.m., looming rain clouds delayed the start of the game for two hours.

Rural Vista began with a touchdown that was nullified because of a penalty. The Bluebirds then took over after stopping the Heat on fourth down. But the Bluebird offense struggled against the Heat’s experienced defense.

Rural Vista scored on a seven-yard run to take the lead. The Bluebirds punted in the second quarter and Rural Vista returned the kick 60 yards for another score.

The Heat scored two more times in the second quarter, making the halftime score 32-0.

Rural Vista scored two more times after the break, ending the game in the third quarter with 6:06 remaining. The final score was 46-0.

Goessel, now 1-2, will travel to Little River (3-0) Friday.

Centre

The Cougars dropped their third game of the season Friday, losing 32-0 to Little River.

“We’ve worked hard this last week to fill the critical positions,” coach Thieen Antoszyk said. “Our new quarterback Noah Brunner has stepped up confidently, demonstrating strong leadership and learning our playbook quickly, while the offensive and defensive line is showing that they can fire off the line and be more physical.”

Centre (0-3) will be at home against Burlingame (3-0) this Friday for homecoming.

Peabody-Burns

This week was the Warriors’ bye week. They will be back in action Friday on the road against Pawnee Heights.
