Marion grapplers finish 2nd at Hesston

The Marion High School wrestling team finished second out of 18 teams Saturday at the Hesston Invitational, 34 points behind Smoky Valley.

Randy Regnier won all of his matches in the 125-pound class, starting with pins against Tommy Jenkins of Hesston and Davion Hill of Wichita West, and finishing with a 9-0 decision against Terrin Bradfield of Halstead in the championship match.

Brody Carroll placed second, losing 8-2 to Riley Soward of Halstead in the championship match. Carroll defeated Kale Kennedy of Smoky Valley and Chris Lowe of Stafford by pin in earlier matches.

Andy Shipman also placed second after a loss in the championship final; he was pinned by Antoine Bannister of Wichita West in the final match of the 135-pound class. Shipman pinned Andrew Colson of McPherson and defeated Cory Rau of Garden Plain, 7-0.

Cole Lewman pinned his first two opponents in the 140-pound class — Jason Otiz of Wichita West and Keith Jackson of Cheney — before losing by technical fall to eventual champion Alex Thibault of Halstead. Lewman pinned Ethan Loder of Smoky Valley to take the third-place victory.

Evan Slater pinned Robert DeBaun of Remington in his first match in the 215-pound class, but was pinned by eventual champion Sione Siale of Chaparral. He defeated Justin Rizutto of West Elk, 3-2, and Daniel Duckworth of Wichita West, 2-1, to win third-place.

Colten Johnson placed fourth in the 152-pound class after forfeiting the third-place match to Matt Wiebe of Hillsboro. Johnson pinned Tucker Anderson of McPherson before losing 12-6 to Lars Peterson of Smoky Valley. Johnson then pinned Matt Steele of Hesston and Skylar Morgan of Leon Bluestem.
