Marion ready to interview applicants

Staff writer

Marion USD 408 is narrowing applicants for school superintendent.

At Monday’s meeting, school board members reviewed applications in a lengthy executive session.

Interim superintendent Lee Leiker said 11 people had applied for the position, and three candidates remained in the running.

A special board meeting will be scheduled after Leiker reaches out to those applicants to see when they might be available to meet with the school board.

Former superintendent Aaron Homburg resigned June 22 after numerous closed-door meetings. A settlement agreement with the district included payment of $62,498.40. It also imposed a gag order on both Homburg and the school district and forbid either from taking legal action against the other.

Whatever happened between the district and Homburg took place after January 2022, when his contract was extended for three years.

Leiker, who retired five years previously as superintendent, was hired June 30 as interim superintendent.

In other matters Monday, board members:

  • Discussed Leiker’s draft of a 2023-2024 school calendar.
  • Recognized staff members.
  • Set an agenda of board meetings for the calendar year.
  • Approved policy updates recommended by the state.
