Same sport, different school

Former Centre High School golf coach Greg Wyatt has agreed to helm Marion’s golf team this year.

Four are out for the Warriors this season: Miles Olson, Lane Svoboda, Anderson Waddell, and Anna Zurcher.

Wyatt retired after 25 years at Centre. This will be his first year as a Marion High coach.

“My main challenge this first year is getting to know the students and understand their strengths and weaknesses on the course,” he said.

He wants to build the students’ confidence in their game by having them set goals and best them.

“We are focusing on trying to improve … particularly from 150 yards into the green and putting as the majority of their strokes will occur here,” he said.

He expects Marion High golfers will work to get better each day and learn from their experiences.

That means not worrying how other teams might be doing.

“We can only focus on what we do and how to best play a particular course hole by hole,” he said. “Our challenge is to play the best we can.”

Golf matches have been adjusted this year because of COVID-19 protocols.

Golfers will not need to wear masks when playing, but they will be required outside the clubhouse when they check scores.

Awards ceremonies will take place outside rather than in the clubhouse.

The team’s first match will be at 1 p.m. April 6 at Herington Country Club.
