School board appoints Nordquist early

News editor

USD 408 Board of Education appointed Jana Nordquist last week to complete the final 2½ months of Keith Collett’s term.

Nordquist was elected to the board April 2 and would have joined the board in July without the appointment. Superintendent Lee Leiker said the Kansas Association of School Boards recommended appointing Nordquist early to return to seven members.

Nordquist was one of three candidates who sought an appointment to the board after Collett’s resignation. The board chose at the time to leave the position vacant until the election.

Collett resigned last year when he moved out of the district to accept an appointment as a district court magistrate judge in Dickinson County.

Doug Regnier was also elected to the board April 2. He will succeed Lyle Leppke in July.

Student from Chase County approved

The board approved for Dasha Brandt of Chase County to begin attending Marion Middle School immediately, despite living outside the district.

Leiker said her parents, Steve and Melanie Brandt, plan to move the family into the district during the summer and want her to begin getting acclimated to the school as quickly as possible. The school district will not provide transportation to the school from outside the district.

Board member Jan Helmer said she had heard of late additions struggling socially at a new school and asked that plenty of support be made available to Brandt.

Closed session ends with no action

The board met in closed session for five minutes to discuss personnel matters. No action was taken on return to open session.
