Seniors celebrate Flag Day

Senior Center correspondent

Marion Senior Center patrons observed Flag Day with trivia about the flag June 14. Harold Conyers provided leaflets with information. Patrons recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the national anthem. Shirley Bowers played patriotic music on the piano during lunch. Mary Hett made cakes as requested by Bob Peterson.

Clayton Hamm and Shirley Moore went to Council Grove to get federal food commodities. The food was sacked and distribution began June 15.

Patrons sang happy birthday to Caleb Abbottt on June 15. They also said farewell to volunteer Rebekah Neal, who has a new job in Wichita. Christy Martinez arrived June 19, taking Neal’s place.

Mary Hett brought cookies June 18 to celebrate her birthday.

Senior Center Day was June 20. Sue Clough conducted the business meeting. Virginia Downing distributed information about insurance.

Howard Collett gave a program about the trip he and his wife, Beth, took to West Point to see their grandson, Hank Collett, graduate from the U.S. Military Academy. Howard’s sisters, Anita Sly of Salina and Marjory Talbott of Halstead, came for the program. Another sister, Shirley Bowers, is a regular at the center.

The center has a special item for sale in the Craft Corner: an LP record, “Praise God,” by the Singspirationals — Helen and Wilbur Leppke, Betty and Eugene Just, and Bob Delk.

The program on Tuesday will be about “Ethiopia Reads.” Guests can bring children’s books to donate to the project. The center will be closed July 4.
