Marion will host free-flight model airplane contest

Heart of America Free Flight Association will hold its annual meet June 21, at Marion Municipal Airport.

Marion tourism professional Margo Yates told Marion City Council Monday the organization of model airplane competitors would be in Marion that weekend which also will tie-in with a bluegrass festival Marion County Lake.

Free flight model airplanes competition is based on how long the rubber-band-powered aircraft can fly.

More than 30 participants from six states are anticipated. The competition also will include a model kit-building seminar for youth.

Yates also reported high school sub-state basketball tournaments will be played at USD 408 Sports and Aquatics Center in Marion.

In a recreation commission report, Yates said there were 35 teams that competed in the basketball league.

Registration forms are being accepted for soccer with swim team, softball, and baseball beginning soon.

There are some high school students interested in providing dance classes in the city auditorium as are gymnastics classes.

In other business:

  • A bill of $800 was paid to Hett Construction after a refuse truck damaged a door at Arlie’s Paint, Body, & Glass at the industrial park.
  • The council was advised there might be a need for a special meeting following a hearing Tuesday night for a conditional use permit for Spur Ridge Animal Vet Hospital.
  • A proclamation was made, proclaiming this week as National FFA Week. Marion High School FFA asked the council for the proclamation.
  • A five-minute closed session was held with the council, Mayfield, and Marion Police Chief Josh Whitwell in attendance to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no action.
  • The next regular council meeting is at 4:30 p.m. March 9 at the city building.
