Marion winless as other county teams have split weeks

The last time the Hillsboro High School girls basketball team beat the Hesston Swathers, Barack Obama was days away from being sworn in as president in 2013.

The Trojans toppled the Swathers Jan. 17, 52-34, en route to finishing the year 23-3 and third place in Class 3A.

Hesston has dominated the series since then, restarting the streak weeks later after the Trojans won.

Coach Nathan Hiebert’s seniors have never beaten the Swathers, either, but that changed Thursday night in Hillsboro.

The Trojans forced 19 Hesston turnovers, 11 off steals, and won their ninth straight game, toppling Hesston, 42-35.

Hillsboro got a balanced scoring attack, paced by Savannah Shahan’s 9 points. Kinsey Kleiner added 8, and Zaylee and Teegan Werth combined for 14 with 7 each as the Trojans upped their mark to 15-2 on the year.

The Haven Wildcats also have been a pest for the Trojans as of late, but Hillsboro ended years of grief Tuesday at Haven with a 47-26 win.

The Swather boys also have been a menace to the Trojans, who enjoyed 13 straight wins heading into Thursday.

The Arctic blast that blanketed the area struck the Trojans’ shooting also, limiting Hillsboro to a frigid 13 percent the first half while Hesston opened a 26-8 lead early in the third quarter.

Hillsboro warmed up to 28 percent the second half and 21 for the game, but the first half was too much to overcome with Hesston cooling the Trojans off, 44-30.

The loss dropped Hillsboro to 13-3.

Marion boys, girls lose to Inman at home

Neither of Marion High’s teams have been able to get back on the winning track since last month as Warriors suffered another winless week with a pair of 8-game slides.

The Warrior boys fell Friday night to Inman, 68-23, during homecoming to drop to 4-13 after Tuesday’s 77-39 loss to Moundridge.

The Warrior girls went 0-3 in a busy week and capped Saturday with a 49-31 loss at Centre.

Marion High’s girls team also was defeated Friday night by visiting Inman, 43-33, and now stand at 1-16 for the season.

Peabody-Burns snaps 3-game losing streak

The Peabody-Burns Warriors snapped a three-game skid Friday, taking down the hosting Centre Cougars, 49-37.

The Warriors dropped a 76-74 heartbreaker at home to Canton Galva Tuesday, and stumbled two nights later at Goessel, 60-44.

The win lifts the Warriors to 11-6.

Centre girls triumph, boys look for first win

Centre girls picked up their fourth win Saturday with a 49-31 home victory over Marion.

Cold shooting by the Warriors put the Cougars ahead 11-0 after one quarter.

Centre led by 9 points at halftime, and 13 points after three quarters, finishing with an 18-point win.

Alyssa Espinoza led scoring with 20 points, including six of eight free throws. Samantha Espinoza scored 11 points and Alex Remmers and Lili Espinoza 4 points each. Lili made seven of eight free throws. After Saturday’s game, the girls’ record was four wins and seven losses.

Centre boys were still looking for their first win after losing to Peabody-Burns at home Friday, 48-37.

The Cougars took a brief 27-26 lead in the third quarter and tied the Warriors near the end of the quarter.

However, they were outscored 13 to 5 in the fourth quarter to lose by 11 points. Leading scorers were Mikey Silhan, 14 points, and Luke Hudson, 8 points.

Goessel’s solid defense held the Herington boys’ team to eight points in Friday’s contest at Goessel.

The Bluebird offense sputtered at times but generated enough points to stay comfortably in the lead.

The Goessel boys defeated cross county rival Peabody Burns 60-41 on Thursday.

The Bluebirds led at the quarters 11-4, 27-16, 44-21. In the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, the Warriors cut the 23 point deficit to 16 points, but Goessel prevailed in this Wheat State League contest.

Nate Zogleman sparked the Bluebird offense in the first quarter with slashing lay-ups on Goessel fast breaks.

Kacen Smith and Jake Hiebert connected on three-pointers in the second period and Skyler Wuest and Jacob Schrag connected from long range in the third period. Caiden Duerksen contributed eight points in the final quarter.

Scoring for Goessel: Skyler Wuest 16, Caiden Duerksen 12, Jake Hiebert 11, Nate Zogleman 8, Kacen Smith 5, Jacob Schrag 4, Eddie Gaeddert 2 and Dawson Stutzman 2.

In Tuesday’s win against Wakefield, Nate Zogleman hit a season high 21 points and Jake Hiebert scored his season best 17 points.

The Goessel boys have now won five in a row and are tied for the lead in the Wheat State League. The game with Little River on Thursday will determine the league champion. Goessel will have a non-league contest at Wichita Classical on Tuesday.

The Bluebirds are 7-0 in league games and 12-5 overall.
