Marion wins homecoming nail-biter

Staff writer

A closely contested homecoming victory for Marion, road victories for Peabody-Burns and Goessel, and losses to undefeated opponents by Centre and Hillsboro marked the week in football for Marion County schools.

Marion

Marion won its non-conference homecoming game over Remington in a 30-22 nail-biter.

Before the game, senior lineman Quade Williams, was crowned homecoming king and announced to a cheering crowd: “Let’s go win us a football game.”

Despite Williams’ enthusiasm, Remington got off to a hot start, scoring first.

Marion quarterback Jack Lanning answered with a 48-yard run that led to a touchdown and a tie score.

Two other Marion players reached the end zone. Caleb Darrow scored on a 34-yard touchdown run, and Trevor Schafers ran for a touchdown and two 2-point conversions.

Leading by only a touchdown and conversion with minutes left to go, Marion’s defense put the game away. Remington had the ball but couldn’t score to force overtime.

For the game, Colby Lollar had 7½ tackles; Ian Ingels, 7; Trevor Schafers, 6½; and Cole Smith, 5½.

“I was proud of how the boys kept fighting and found a way to get the job done in the end,” coach Shaun Craft said. “Got to give Remington a lot of credit. They were big, physical upfront, and came to play Friday night.”

Marion (2-2) will be on the road Friday for a non-district game against Belle Plaine (0-4).

Hillsboro

Hillsboro lost Friday’s road non-conference game against unbeaten Ellsworth, 28-0.

“It was an experience that I have never experienced personally as a player or coach,” coach Demetrius Cox said. “It’s my responsibility as head coach to make sure what happened last night does not happen again.”

Laying a goose egg on the scoreboard is never a goal for any team but unfortunately happens unexpectedly from time to time.

“We have a team filled with talent but with so little experience to make against a good team like Ellsworth,” Cox said. “Ellsworth dominated us in every aspect of the game, some due to our mistakes, and some was them being a great team,” Coach Cox said.

Hillsboro (2-3) will be celebrating homecoming Friday when the Trojans face Halstead (1-3).

“They are much better team then what their record shows,” Cox said. “I’m just hoping that our guys learned from last Friday and come ready to play,.

Peabody-Burns

Peabody-Burns cruised to a huge lopsided 53-6 victory Friday over Pawnee Heights in anon-conference road game.

“It was a great team effort Friday night for the Warriors,” coach Kody Tegtmeier said. “Solid games for multiple players as we had four different guys score at least one rushing touchdown and three guys with at least one receiving touchdown.”

Senior Colton Gossen had nine rushes for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Sophomore Cade Gossen had 10 rushes for 66 yards and one touchdown.

Senior Jeff Glover had four rushes for 15 yards and one touchdown.

Senior Kael Hutchison had two rushes for 13 yards that lead to a touchdown along with three catches for 101 yards that lead to two more touchdowns.

Senior Tanner Parks finished with 103 yards and two touchdowns rushing as well as an eight-yard touchdown reception.

“Sophomore Andrew Reynolds was a huge spark in his first game for the Warriors,” Tegtmeier said. “Junior foreign exchange student Fridtjof Wortmann continues to improve each week while learning the game and helps us tremendously on offense, defense, and handling the kicking duties for us.”

Peabody-Burns (2-2) will be at home Friday against Southern Coffey County (1-3).

Goessel

The Bluebirds got off to a quick start in their first district game Friday at Herington.

Jake Wiens carried for touchdowns four times in the first quarter, with Goessel holding a 30-8 lead at the break.

In the second quarter, the Railers scored twice, and Noah Schrag found Caleb Burkholder for a 20-yard scored, giving the Bluebirds a 38-24 halftime lead.

Herington got within a touchdown when returned the kickoff to open the second half. But the Bluebirds regrouped. The Schrag-Burkholder combination worked two more times for touchdowns, giving the Bluebirds a 52-30 victory.

Goessel amassed 407 yards of offense, averaging 8.8 yards per play. Wiens led the offense with 289 yards rushing. Burkholder tallied 59 yards receiving.

Goessel never punted

. Burkholder and Eli Boden led the Bluebirds in tackles. This was the first game in district play.

Goessel (2-2) will be at home Friday against Solomon (2-2) in another district game.

Centre

Centre (2-2) lost 55-26 at undefeated non-conference opponent Waverly. The Cougar coaching could not be reached for comment.
