Marion wrestlers place 5th in 1st tournament

Staff writer

Marion High School Warriors wrestlers placed fifth out of fourteen teams in their first tournament of the year Saturday at Mission Valley.

“The weekend went really well,” head wrestling coach Chad Adkins said Monday. “We wrestled much better than I expected the first week out.”

Individually, eight wrestlers placed, contributing to Marion’s final team score of 113 points.

Results of the tournament were Jarrett Johnson, third place, 106 lbs.; A.J. Cogdill, fifth, 106 lbs.; Bryce Shults, third, 120 lbs.; Zac Dvorak, fifth, 170 lbs.; Zac Lewman, third, 182 lbs.; John Nordquist, second, 195 lbs.; Kyle Palic, second, 220 lbs.; and Dylan Cochran, seventh, 285 lbs.

Adkins noted that Norquist and Palic’s wrestling was exceptional and that the freshmen all wrestled well.

Mission Valley was 138-pounder Paul Stratman’s first tournament Adkins said.

Although Noah Albin and Ezra Darnall did not win a match, Adkins said they both did a great job. Darnall lost both of his matches by only one point.

“We saw plenty to work on, but many good things happened,” Adkins said. “We will kick our preparation in high gear now.”

Marion wrestles again 9 a.m. Saturday in the Hesston Tournament.
