Big Rain

The “long dry spell” was broken the latter part of last week with a rain and snowstorm that lasted for several days. The total rainfall for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday was five and one-half inches. The rivers were way up and for a time, there was much apprehension of a flood. But, the temperature wend town, snow started to fall, and this stopped the rising of the streams. The rain and snow did a vast amount of good throughout the country, as it was much needed. Conditions in this county were not as serious as they have been in many places — especially in the western part of the state and in Oklahoma and Texas — but still the wheat was needing moisture. And, incidentally, there were a lot of cisterns that were empty. So, we are all happy.

On streetcars in Milwaukee the other day, were big placards announcing a “Barn Dance” at which the “prize” was to be “two live pigs.” Nothing like the dignity and refinement of a big city.

Charley Brooker has severed his connection with the Remmers Grocery Company, having disposed of his interest to Mr. Remmers, who will continue the business. Beginning March 1, he will begin work in Loveless & Sons’ grocery department and will also be advertising manager for the firm, writing their advertisements, preparing their show cards and other work of the kind. He is capable and agreeable and will doubtless be a splendid man for the firm.

Quite a number of people in this vicinity are talking of going to Wichita to see Ben Hur. It has been announced that the Rock island will hold their night train until after the performance for the accommodation of those who desire to attend.
