Who has noticed the robin these frosty mornings perched upon the topmost bough of a tree in the yard, pouring forth his melodious song as if his throat would burst? Is not this a sign of spring?
New Hospital
The entire second floor of the new Wheeler building is being fitted up for a hospital and it will be one of the finest hospitals in central Kansas. Dr. R.C. Smith has associated with him in the enterprise, Dr. G.J. Goodsheller, who expects to arrive soon after the first of April. Dr. Goodsheller has had a number of years of hospital experience, in Chicago, and as head surgeon in a big hospital at Lincoln, Nebraska. He is an old friend of Dr. Smith. The hospital will have 15 rooms and will be able to accommodate at least 15 patients. There will be a completely equipped operating room, laboratories, drug room, kitchen and every appliance to make it a modern hospital in every respect.
One of the heaviest snows of the winter fell the first of this week. Farmers are generally agreed that it is a splendid thing for the wheat. We do not need the moisture but the snow is a great protection to the wheat from damage by freezing.
The real estate fussiness which has been a little quiet for sometime is beginning to pick up again. For instance, on Monday three good-sized deals were completed on the record at the register of deeds’ office. F.C. Utting bought 200 acres from Fred Boettcher, paying $21,000. This gives him a half section near Antelope. Mr. Boettcher bought a place from the Firebaughs—240 acres, paying $21,000. On the same day, B.L. Thompson of Herington bought the W.W. Alexander quarter section in Grant Township, for $8,000. This latter deal is an illustration of the way Marion County lands have been going up. Mr. Alexander had owned this quarter for only three or four years and paid for it about $3,000.
A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fox on February 19.
John Gaede was in town between trains Monday en route to from Hillsboro to Aulne, where he is preparing to open a store in the new building at that place. His son is with him and the goods are being unloaded and preparations made for the opening.
