“What Did You Get?”
No, no, the reporter did not attempt to see ‘em all, but just incidentally as he jogged around he picked up the following information as to the way Santa Claus treated the fellows “around town.”
“I got a lot of socks, a cap, a pair of galluses, a box of cigars and other things too numerous to mention. Got a box all done up in tissue paper and tied with pink ribbon and the label on the box was ‘Copenhagen Snuff.’ But I’m afraid to try the bloomin’ stuff—I’m afraid it will explode.” Will someone who knows what Copenhagen snuff is, kindly arise and impart the information to Mart Mansfield?
Judge Vaughn says he got a pair of shoes that were a size too large. Is there anything about that story that is hard to believe—about a pair of shoes being too large for him? Don’t tell the Judge right to his face what you think about it.
Al Richardson got a leather grip which he says is a pippin. Says he guesses it is a gentle suggestion to him to keep travelin’.
This is as far as the reporter got on this thing. He found that all the other fellows got about the same thing. Slippers lead the procession, with neckties a close second. Cabbage-leaf cigars also come in for dishonorable mention.
Miss Helena Rethemeyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Rethemeyer, suffered a very painful accident last week. She accidentally put her hands into a pan of hot candy which had just been taken from the stove. Both hands were so severely burned that most of the skin came off.
Charley Marsh was over from Peabody the first of the week. He has brought suit in District Court against the Wells Fargo Express Company for the $1,000 reward offered by that company in the Carr murder case. He was the man who arrested Carr at Newton and had much to do with working up the evidence, and claims that he is clearly entitled to the reward. Clark and Carpenter are his attorneys.
Miss Genevieve Funk was the recipient of a pretty swell present Tuesday, which day was the anniversary of her birth. The present was a Studebaker touring car from her father. An informal dinner was served to some of the neighbors’ young folks.
Don’t fail to be at the Auditorium January 6 to hear Miss Freeman’s readings and Miss Grace’s singing and imitation of bird notes. A fine entertainment is promised.
The Christmas entertainment at Aulne on Friday night, under the leadership of Miss Nell Burkholder, was very much enjoyed, and has been highly spoken of.
People have been paying their taxes this year quite promptly. The County Treasurer has taken in about $170,000 which is $50,000 more than was received at this time last year.
Mr. G.W. Stanforth is improving nicely from injuries received at the explosion at the light plant of the Methodist church two weeks ago. The lighting plant has been entirely overhauled this week and is now ready for operation.
