Post office Notes

At the rural carriers’ examination held at this place last Saturday, six persons took the examination: Henry L. Bergman, J.L. Jones and C.W. Savage of Durham, Edward Louis, Chas. M. Palmer and Garfield Gurley of Florence. On account of a resignation at Durham, there is a vacancy at that place and a new route is being started out of Florence.

Beginning today foreign postage is reduced, letters going to Engand, Scotland, Ireland and Wales for two cents.

W.H. Gaunt began carrying mail on route five this morning.

The rural route carriers and Postmaster D.D. McIntosh sprung a surprise on Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Blankley Wednesday evening. It was a jolly crowd of them that met at J.S. Brooks’ and went to the Blankley home about eight o’clock. The surprise was complete and for the next hour, the company had a very pleasant visit. They took with them two nice rocking chairs. Mr. Blankley was on route seven since the installation of the service, having resigned to go to his claim near Meade, Meade county. We wish them prosperity and happiness in their new home.

High School Notes

Marion high school will play ball against Florence high school at Florence October 2. We would like to have a least a few people to go along to root for us and help us win.

The new basket ball and goals came last Tuesday. The basket ball squad will begin practicing next week. We intend to win out in the league.

The public speaking classes are getting started pretty well. The scholars are becoming used to it and are not nearly so afraid as they were at first.

We intended to play base ball against District. 56 Wednesday evening but for some reason or other they did not show up.

On account of the number of boys that are in school it seems as though there is going to be a hard fight for places on the basket ball team.

Don’t forget to go to Florence Friday.

The concrete corners and cement walks are being put in at the south side of Main and Second street.

J.H. Thomason has rented the King building east of Riggs Bros. grocery and will soon open up a general harness shop.

The band will accompany the Marion delegation Saturday afternoon to hear Taft at Florence. A special car will be set out to accommodate Marion people.

Purdy’s Suitatorium is now ready for business in the Jones building on Main street. They make a specialty of pressing, cleaning and repairing ladies’ and gents’ clothing.

Ray Smith has completed a new parlor and a fine porch for Barney Amick, two and one-half miles southwest of Marion, and has started a two room addition and general remodeling of Wm. Gaunt’s home in Marion.

Dr. and Mrs. G.P. Marner returned last Friday from their Colorado trip. The doctor had intended going on a hunting trip for two weeks but changed his mind and went out to a friend’s ranch and chopped wood instead. Says he feels fine.

A new heating plant is being installed at the Baptist church.

There was a change the weather and we had frost Sunday and Monday nights. Overcoats were quite fashionable Sunday.

Harry A. Rogers, a member of the ’08 graduating class from Marion’s high school, and who made the drawings for the annual, has established a studio and will appreciate and carefully execute any trial order sent him, for either newspaper or catalogue work. His work on the annual demonstrated that he has ability above the average.

Messrs. Fred and D. Lewis and Val Jacobs have recently constructed residences for Oscar Bower at Ramona and for Mr. Kreutziger four miles west of town.

The Evangelical church near the Grapes schoolhouse will be dedicated next Sunday with appropriate services. The galvanized iron cap for the steeple was made at Pollitt & Kleinhammer’s.

A cement walk is being put in on the west of the Marion National Bank.

Last Monday Mrs. R.E. Chapman of near Aulne, brought the Record a basket of apples, which for size, perfect form and flavor excelled anything it was our pleasure to possess this year. Apples were plentiful at the Chapman home this year and brought a good price. Their varieties are Grimes Golden, Cadwalader Golden, Jonathans, Dominie and Ramboes, everyone a prime favorite. It does one good to be remembered, don’t you know.
