It was announced at Monday’s meeting of the city commission that demolition will begin next week on the condemned 1887 Stephen Jex building at the corner of 2nd and Main streets. Stone walls of the structure are in danger of caving-in, and have been declared a hazard by engineers.
The annual induction ceremony for Marion High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society was held Nov. 6. New members inducted were Brian Bina, Blake Conyers, James Davis, Shawna Hett, Ashlee Moore, Matt Rhodes, Joel Versch, Alan Vogel, Heidi Zogelman, and Krista Zogelman.
Mike Callizo of Windsor, Calif., was in Marion Nov. 8 to see the courthouse. He said he has visited more than 2,000 courthouses in his travels, and speaks knowledgeably of J.C. Holland, architect of the Marion County Courthouse and several others in Kansas. “This is my favorite style,” Callizo said. “The best courthouses are in the Midwest.”
Jim Cather is pictured on the front page as he sorts tax notices in the Marion County Treasurer’s office. Notices were mailed this week to property owners.
Larry Hatteberg will be the guest speaker Jan. 29 at the Marion Chamber of Commerce annual dinner. Chamber officials have invited Hatteberg to have tape sets and books about his “Kansas People” series available at the annual dinner.
