Union Pacific crews worked Thursday installing new crossing signs on west K-256/Main Street in Marion. Automated arms will be installed at the crossing to reduce potential for collisions between trains and vehicles.

Much of the southern half of rural Kansas will have a new area code staring in February. The Wichita metropolitan area will retain the 316 area code. Others in the 316 area code change to 620.

Polly Ferrell, former Marion High School instructor, was the guest speaker at McGillicuddy’s Restaurant Monday for an event celebrating the 140th birthday of the state of Kansas.

Tim Costello won the annual Pack 102 pinewood derby held Sunday in Marion. Adam Palic was second and Patrick Hodson was third. Matt Sprowls won the best design award.

The 2001 Centre High School basketball homecoming king and queen are CJ Irwin, son of Robert and Marianne Prine, Ramona, and Megan Luna, daughter of George and Dawn Luna, Antelope.

Wanda Burk entertained several friends Friday with a luncheon at Kingfisher’s Inn. The women and their spouses all went on a cruise together a year ago. Guests were Jeanne Morris of Topeka, Vernie Beaston, Jean Case, Beth Collett, and Vivian Conyers.
