Outgoing Mayor Max Hayen presented Mayor Eloise Mueller with the key to the city and a gavel Monday during the Marion City Commission meeting. Hayen said the gavel was a gift from the late Jean Holmes, and he wanted it to become the mayor’s gavel.

A group of students from Germany arrived in Marion Wednesday for a two-week visit.

New signs promoting Marion have been erected on U.S. 56 south of Marion Reservoir. The signs are brighter than previous brown painted signs, which were showing their age after 15 years.

Marion Chamber of Commerce met at the Big Scoop Friday for a “spaghetti scoop.” Chamber board members served a full meal without plates, changing butcher paper on the tables between courses.

Marion High School students finished third last week in the CVL business and technology contest. Placing first were Merissa Riggs and Ashley DeForest. Others placing were Rebecca Savage, Andy Crofoot, Amy Tajchman, Courtney Geis, and Alicia Pippin.

Francis and Rita (Silhan) Steiner of rural Tampa will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary April 22 with a Mass at St. Columba Catholic Church in Elmo.

Lana Fahey, one of the kindergarten teachers at Marion Elementary School was selected this past week as the school’s teacher of the year.
