Marion County Commissioners participated in a tree-planting ceremony on the courthouse lawn Friday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Kansas Territory. The redbud tree was provided by the Kansas Sesquicentennial Commission at no cost. A memorial marker will be placed near the tree.

Pictured on the front page are Ira Penner and Rex Wilson as they load aluminum cans to be taken to the recycling center at Newton. Cans are collected for the Girl Scouts at a site on North Walnut Street. Since May 1999, more than $6,000 has been collected for the scouts.

The Alpha Omega Chapter of the retired teachers’ organization has extended incentive awards of $300 to aid in college expenses of Danielle Johnson and Dionne Jost of Hillsboro, Tina Hague of Marion, and Ashley Perkins of Lincolnville.

The Cottonwood Valley War Dogs baseball team took first place this past weekend in a 12-years-and-under division baseball tournament at El Dorado. Team members are Cody Wildin, Brandon Line, Jacob Edwards, Dillon Wildin, Tyler Ediger, Ben Green, Shawn Talkington, Isaac Hett, Jim Lauer, Garrett Benjamin, Brian Fruechting, Heath Hill, and Wil Case.
