Two new county commissioners, Dan Holub and Randy Dallke, were sworn in by Judge Michael Powers, and both spoke about county roads. Dallke said a five-year plan for resurfacing chip-and-seal roads was not effective, and Holub said road grader operators ought to be professionally trained.

With power still out in Marion, the Record staff relocated to Hillsboro last week to publish a special extra edition about Marion’s winter storm, then returned to Marion to distribute the extra 2,000 copies from an office without lights and heated only by an antiquated floor furnace never removed after central heat was installed 40 years earlier.

Marion High School senior Amber Richmond has been named a finalist in a state scholarship pageant for homecoming queens. She will compete in interviews and a prom gown competition in March in Kansas City.

Ruth Herbel of Marion was initially surprised to be invited to attend the swearing in ceremony for Dallas’ first female sheriff but later learned that she was invited because her great-great-great-grandfather had been Dallas County’s first elected sheriff in 1846.

Weldon Deines of Herington sung songs Friday with his karaoke machine as Marion Senior Center celebrated what was billed as its first Elvis Presley birthday celebration.

Dale Vogel scored 20 points and grabbed three rebounds as Marion High School claimed its first ever Mid-Central Activities Association victory, 53-43, over Hoisington on Friday.
