First in an upcoming series of photos of “Pete the Rhino,” a promotion sponsored by the Chingawassa Days steering committee, appears on the front page. This week’s concrete rhinoceros, decorated in true cowboy style, can be seen at Gene’s Travel and G&J Video at 426 E. Main.

Baseball pitcher Bryan Swenson, senior at Marion High School, is this week’s Marion County Record Athlete of the Week.

Jenna Tajchman, 2002 graduate of Centre High School, is one of only three Kansas State students who received Phi Kappa Phi Study/Internship Abroad grants. Tajchman is to study this summer in Prague, Czech Republic. She is the daughter of Joe and Barbara Tajchman of Lincolnville.

Norma Hannaford was guest of honor during a round of parties last week when she celebrated her 101st birthday.

A large crowd of Civil War history buffs and fans of western writer Don Coldsmith of Emporia squeezed into Marion City Library Friday night to hear Coldsmith’s presentation of “It Happened Here—Kansas and the Civil War.”
