An anchor business on Marion’s Main Street for more than 75 years, the Duckwall store will close Jan. 9. The Marion store was among 43 stores nationwide and 22 in Kansas to close permanently. Duckwall-ALCO Stores Inc. of Abilene made the announcement Monday.

Marion City Administrator David Mayfield revealed Tuesday morning that he will retire at the end of the year. Following two executive sessions Monday evening the city council appointed Marion Economic Development Director Doug Kjellin as assistant city administrator.

Little Donnie Do-Dad, one of the original KFDI radio ranch hands will perform Dec. 8 at Marion Senior Center.

The Historic Sites Board of Reviews at Kansas State Historical Society has approved the nomination of the Florence Opera House to the National Register of Historic Places.

The deeds have been recorded and the former White Ranch east of Peabody now is part of Wildcat Creek Ranch, headquartered southeast of Newton and owned by Klee Watchous.

Residents around Marion County Park and Lake will have their annual parade of lights on Sunday. Hot chocolate and popcorn will be served and Santa will hand out candy canes. There also will be a brass trio playing Christmas music.
