The year was one of mixed economic blessings. National retailers established Wal-Mart Neighborhood Store in Hillsboro to fill part of a void left by the departure of Heartland Foods and Dollar General in Marion as the long-awaited successor to bankrupt Duckwall’s.

Marion Health Mart Pharmacy and Don’s Drugs in Peabody were purchased by new owners. Hillsboro Community Hospital opened a downtown clinic and planned a new $11.4 million facility at US-56 and Industrial Rd.

But Alco closed in Hillsboro, an attempt to lure a Cobblestone Inn to Marion fizzled, and Marion Chamber of Commerce disbanded.

Elvis impersonator Marc Baker will perform a variety of the King’s well-known songs at a free concert at 7 p.m. Jan. 7 at Marion Senior Center. Patrons are being encouraged to don poodle skirts and saddle oxfords for the event. Popcorn and other snacks will be served.
