Dustin Rhodes, 20, Ramona, narrowly escaped the destructive force of an oncoming freight train Thursday, surviving moments before the train “ripped the car in half.”

Rhodes was westbound on 360th Rd., attempting to return his sister’s 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass “so she could go to work,” when he lost control on an icy curve near a railroad crossing just south of Ramona

“The arms were coming down,” Rhodes said. “I tried to stop but I just kept sliding.”

He ran from the car just before the train, unable to stop, plowed into it.

Skylar Creed, Ashtin Loewen, and Paige Smallwood are pictured holding a quilt with class pictures and Wildcat logos that eighth graders in Deanna Thierolf’s class spent the past week creating so it could be raffled to raise money for the county food bank.

Other students who helped create the quilt were Robyn Anderson, Chloe Burkholder, Shelby Cairnes, Elijah Catlin, Luke Dawson, Paige Garcia, Cheyanne Lewis, Calib Mallory, Alfweena Meyer, Kaylee Rudolph, and James Wickman.

Marion High School graduate Adam Heery has been added to the list of St. Luke Hospital’s outreach providers. He provides mental health consulting services in private practice with Kansas Professional Counseling Services.

Bailey Robson scored the winning basket at the buzzer as Marion beat Hillsboro 38-36 in a girls’ basketball game Tuesday night.
