Next month, former Council Grove attorney Mike Powers will celebrate a quarter-century of service as 8th Judicial District judge in Marion. The transition from attorney to judge wasn’t as easy as anticipated.
“It was like a football player who had played in many games being told, ‘You’re going to be the official,’” he said.
Marion City Council was divided Monday on whether to allow or ban chickens in the city limits. A compromise to be drafted for consideration at a future meeting would allow no more than six hens — no roosters or other domestic fowl — and required that they be kept at least 10 feet from property lines and at least 50 feet from adjacent buildings.
County commissioners and Marion city administrator Roger Holter clashed Monday over who should serve on a proposed county economic development committee.
Commissioners were looking at county businesspeople, but Holter suggested that committee members needed specific skills, not just experience.
Holter suggested skills with merger acquisitions, property management, property acquisition, human resources management, and legal matters.
Richard Litton, 30, Peabody, was arrested on suspicion of counterfeiting $5 and $10 bills found circulating in the county.
After winning a Heart of America League tournament, a troupe of Marion High School forensics students will compete at a state tournament Saturday in Wichita.
Among the students are Elizabeth Meyer, Adam Kjellin, Nathan Baldwin, Mason Pederson, Cade Harms, Jeremy Hett, Colin Williams, Shyla Harris, Tori Bond, Aiden Cairns, Luisa Junqueira, Sam Kelsey, and Jarred Rahe.
Businesses supporting local news by advertising in this week’s paper included Absolute Auto Towing, Animal Health Center, Baker Furniture and Carpet, BC Motors, Brookens and Boehm law firm, Carlsons’ Grocery, Casey’s General Store, Central National Bank, Dutton Tree Service, Eagle Communications, Great Plains Federal Credit Union, Hein Auto Repair, Hillsboro Ford, Jim Davis Air Conditioning, Kelsey’s Painting Service, Lanning Pharmacy, Lumberyard, Marion National Bank, Midway Motors, Nightengale Transmissions, Prairieland Partners, Straub’s International, U.S. Postal Service, and Webster Auto Service.
