Marion officials are trying to figure out what to do after county commissioners approved purchase of a radio system incompatible with the city’s.

Mayor Todd Heitschmidt told council members they would have to find $122,000 to convert city police and firefighters to the new system or they would not be able to communicate with sheriff’s dispatchers and deputies.

The 50th wedding anniversary of Larry and Ruth (Reith) Lange of Marion will be celebrated with an open house 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at Our Savior Lutheran Church hall in Marion.

Kris Srajer of rural Tampa has been working online for 20 years.

She had been doing billing for a company in Omaha when she married Jim Srajer and moved to Tampa.

A year later, her boss called and asked whether she’d come back and work remotely.

She tests software, checks billings for accuracy, and make sure programming is correct before it goes to customers. She often works 11-hour days.

“It takes a special person to work from home,” she said. “You have to keep focused on your job.”

For the third year in a row, Travis Hett won the annual Marion Country Club championship with a 36-hole, two-day score of 142. His brother, Nickolas, was hot on his trail, 8 strokes down at 150.

After her Butler Community College team won a national championship in softball, shortstop Danae Bina of Marion has signed to play for Division II Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.

In Butler’s championship run, she batted .429 with nine doubles, a triple, and two home runs.

She also was a member of Hillsboro High School’s 2012 state champion team.

Eight new teachers will be in Marion-Florence schools when school bells ring this fall. Gary Ewert will teach high school American history.

Simon McKee will teach world geography, Kansas history, and civics at the high school. Monica Leihy will teach high school Spanish. Dmitry Bucklin will teach instrumental music. Tyler McMichael will teach fifth grade. Mark Lockhart will teach industrial arts. Randy Skiles will teach high school math, robotics, and engineering. And Emily Overton will teach kindergarten.
